Founded in 1753 and named in honour of George II, King of
Great Britain and Ireland, the one time important seaport
and shipbuilding centre of Lunenburg remains a living legacy
to those seafaring days.
Lunenburg's working waterfront still echoes the ring of the
blacksmith's hammer as traditional skills are plied, and you
may catch a glimpse of the famous Tall Ship Bluenose II, a
replica of Canada's most famous tall ship, The Blue Nose.
The Fisheries Museum is definitely worth a visit and has
many hands-on interpretive displays.
A stroll through the "Old Town" of Lunenburg will take you
back in time as you appreciate the architecture and designs
of master craftsmen. Lunenburg was designated a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in recognition of this carefully preserved
district.
The many local art galleries display the works of
Lunenburg's many fine artisans who express their Maritime
heritage and traditions through carvings, model ship making,
pottery and beautiful paintings of the area.
There are many recreational activities for those who enjoy
the outdoors. Campgrounds, golf courses and sandy beaches
are all close by.
Part of the famous "Lighthouse Route" on the South Shore of
Nova Scotia, Lunenburg is the perfect place to stay in a
vacation rental as you take the time to explore the area.
Here you will find cottages, suites in restored seaside
heritage homes, bed and breakfast inns and private homes to
rent directly from an owner for a memorable Nova Scotia
vacation.
