About Kauai

Although Kauai is smallest in size of the four major Hawaiian Island it is the fourth largest of the Hawaiian chain.  Nearly circular in shape, Kauai's land area encompasses 533 square miles, 25 miles long by 33 miles wide at its furthest points.  Geologically, Kauai is the oldest of Hawaii's major islands, site of the first Hawaii landing by Captain James Cook in 1778.  Many movies with South Seas and Asian settings have been shot at the beaches and valleys of Kauai.  The majority of Kauai's approximately 58,000 residents live and work in coastal areas, leaving the interior of Kauai spectacularly beautiful and pristine.  The summit of Waialeale is the wettest spot in the United States with an average rainfall of 444 inches per year.  At the Poipu Beach resort area on the southern coast, rainfall averages only 35 inches per year which makes this a very popular location for Kauai vacation rentals.

Kauai's weather is close to perfect year-round with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid 70s to the mid 80s, slightly warmer in the summer.  Kauai is famed for its diverse and scenic wonders, such as the 3,567 foot deep Waimea Canyon, stretching 14 miles across the western end of the island and often called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" and the 3,000 foot high mountain cliffs that rise from the ocean floor to form the magnificent unspoiled Na Pali Coast.

Kauai has been the film location site for more than 60 major motion picture and television films including "South Pacific", "Blue Hawaii" with Elvis Presley, "Jurassic Park I, II and III", "Six Days/Seven Nights", and "Dragonfly".  It is no wonder that Kauai vacation rentals and affordable accommodations are so popular.

An old prophet says "O Kauai nui moku lehua, aina nui makekau", "Great Kauai, island of warriors and land of men ever on the defense."
