The Republic of Croatia ( the pearl
of the Adriatic) is a European country situated on the
Adriatic Sea and it stretches from the slopes of the
Alps and deep into the Pannonian Valley to the banks of
the Danube and the Drava rivers. Croatia can be divided
into three distinct zones. These are the Coastal region,
the Mountain region and the Pannonian region. Like many
countries in Western Europe, Croatia was founded on the
ruins of the Roman Empire. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs
and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as
Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became an
independent communist state under the strong hand of
Marshal Tito. Even though in 1991, Croatia declared its
independence from Yugoslavia, it took four years before
occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian
lands.
Besides its natural beauty, Croatia has been a part of
Europe and a center of culture for at least 2000 years.
The capital city of Zagreb is a center of arts and
culture with its numerous museums and galleries hosting
world-renowned exhibits and festivals. The old walled
town of Dubrovnik, a favourite destination for tourists,
offers treasures of the past to numerous visitors from
all over the world. Other popular tourist destinations
include Rovinj, a relaxed picturesque town of cobbled
streets on the coast of Istria, and Split, in the heart
of the province of Dalmatia, the largest Croatian city
on the Adriatic coast.
English is widely spoken in Croatia and holiday rentals
include numerous five star boutique hotels, quaint bed
and breakfast accommodations, camping sites throughout
the countries as well as vacation rentals by owner,
which include vacation villas and apartments. Vacation
rentals by owner is becoming a popular way to see the
world because of the personal touch of renting from an
owner as well as more affordable rates compared to
hotels.
