About Akumal

Akumal is a small beach-front vacation resort community 100km (62miles) south of Cancun, between the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. 

Akumal means "place of the turtles" in the Mayan language because for centuries, the great sea turtles have come to the fine white sands of Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay.  Turtles can be found in Akumal laying eggs of the beaches at night throughout the nesting season ( April to July) or swimming in the main Bay during the day.

Akumal, the site of several Spanish galleon shipwrecks, was officially founded in 1958 as a community for scuba divers when they were looking for Spanish treasure.
